EDUCATION

Brass Clinic presentation.jpg

I am a firm believer in propelling the art of the French horn forward through education for those students who are dedicated to the art form. I have over twenty years of successful teaching experience at all levels, and always welcome new students at Montclair State University and privately as well. My students have gone on to jobs in professional orchestras, military bands, and professional freelance work. They have been admitted to schools such as Mannes, Julliard, San Francisco Conservatory, Kinhaven Music camp, New Jersey Area and Regional Band, and have won solo competitions.

My wide-ranging professional performance experience proves that I have the musical expertise and ear necessary to coach and encourage young students to reach high playing levels. Please feel free to contact me here for more information. I am available for private lessons via Zoom, Skype, and FaceTime. Until then, please look here for recommendations from my present and past students.

Student testimonials

"Studying with Kyle has been a great experience for me this past semester. As an Artist Diploma student, I really can appreciate the fact that Kyle is open to new and innovative ideas when it comes to the horn, especially because I like to play jazz every now and then. His experience in various context of performance really aids in understanding why he teaches the perspectives that he does. I'm looking forward to a year of lessons with him soon!"

“My 2 years studying with Kyle in high school really set a strong foundation for my horn playing. He introduced me to all of the basic fundamentals of the horn and we worked extensively on technique and musicality. My musicianship improved drastically in such a short amount of time.  Kyle’s teaching on audition preparation helped me get into music schools like Mannes and Juilliard. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Kyle’s effective teaching and positive encouragement.”

-Vincent Kiray, Principal Horn, Orlando Philharmonic

"I met Kyle in the summer of 2016.  I just finished my Master's degree and was looking to make my mark in New York City.  After playing for him, he gave me the opportunity to learn from him at Montclair State University with an assistantship.  While I've gotten a lot of compliments on my tone by others, Kyle found a way to improve it even further and make my playing sound effortless.  He really helped me dig into my mid-low range, what some considered in the past as a weakness, and found ways to make it sound consistent and resonant.  I graduated with an Artist's Diploma in 2018 and have been consistently working since then.  Kyle gave me both the skills and the connections to help me become a professional musician."

-Alex Gertner, NY/NJ Professional hornist

"Kyle is a fine musician who happens to play horn.  I am an amateur player and have studied with him for two years.  He has helped me tremendously with endurance and tone quality, and continues to challenge me on phrasing and mental focus.  His coaching has made me think more deeply about what is going on in the music and made me a better musician all-around."
